CP65

THE DOLBY CP65 STEREO CINEMA PROCESSOR
THE QUALITY, FLEXIBILITY AND HIGH PERFORMANCE YOU EXPECT, AT A COST-EFFECTIVE PRICE.

The Model CP65 is the fourth generation in the series of Dolby cinema processors that reaches back to the introduction of Dolby Stereo itself. In a familiar, easy-to-operate format, it provides a unique combination of flexibility, high performance, and cost-effectiveness.

Two channels of Dolby SR are incorporated within the CP65 to take advantage of the higher quality soundtracks on Dolby Stereo SR prints without the cost and complexity of an external adapter. Dolby A-type noise reduction is provided in addition for conventional Dolby Stereo playback, so that the CP65 is equipped as standard to play all current 35 mm analog optical formats.

The CP65 has been specifically designed as an ideal interface/control unit for theatres intending to equip for playback of the six-channel digital soundtrack on Dolby Stereo SR•D prints. In addition, a number of circuit refinements, including updated 2:4 decoding, are incorporated. The CP65 interfaces readily with all current and likely future theatre automation systems, and may be optionally fitted for automatic sound format selection on prints with Dolby edge code.

The CP65 is built to the same standards as the professional Dolby equipment used in recording all Dolby Stereo films, and incorporates the advanced circuitry necessary to complement precisely the techniques used in their preparation. Thus the CP65, in the tradition of all cinema processors from Dolby Laboratories, faithfully reproduces Dolby Stereo soundtracks as heard originally in the dubbing theatre.

DOLBY CP65 FEATURES

The CP65 accommodates two projectors, and incorporates basic features of previous Dolby cinema processors such as third-octave screen speaker equalization, a non-sync input for an intermission music program source, format selection pushbuttons with LED's, signal-presence and power supply indicators to assist trouble shooting, and an emergency Bypass circuit with its own power supply. It also provides significant new features, including:

  • Dolby A-type and Dolby SR for processing both Dolby Stereo and Dolby Stereo SR release prints.

  • Six-channel input and fader to optimize interface with the Dolby DA20 decoder for digital playback of Dolby Stereo SR•D prints.

  • Special output combining left, center, and right channels for use with auxiliary sound systems for the hearing impaired.

  • Optional Edge Code Reader on the backplane for automatic sound format selection on prints with Dolby edge code.

  • Optional Dolby Stereo 70 mm magnetic playback.

    INSIDE THE CP65

    1. Optical preamp with precise slit-loss correction for two projectors with stereo solar cells.

    2. Dolby SR decoder modules for accurate playback of Dolby Stereo SR prints.

    3. Dolby A-type decoder module (two channels) for conventional Dolby Stereo prints.

    4. 2:4 decoder with updated technology for optimum performance from all Dolby Stereo optical prints.

    5. 27-band 1/3 octave equalization for screen speaker response to the international standard for wide-range playback.

    6. Stereo surround/subwoofer module with stereo surround equalization to support six-channel playback of Dolby Stereo SR•D prints DA20 digital decoder required).

    7. B-chain module controls playback level and selects outputs from optical sources, non-sync sources, magnetic preamps, and Dolby DA20 digital decoder.

    8. Power supply module with Automatic Bypass mode and standby supply lets the show continue in an emergency.

OPTIMIZING THEATRE SOUND WITH THE CP65

To take full advantage of the wide volume and frequency range of Dolby Stereo SR analog and SR•D digital soundtracks, theatres installing the CP65 are encouraged to comply as much as practical with recommended specifications for amplifiers, speakers, acoustics, and background noise available from Dolby Laboratories ("Technical Guidelines for Dolby Stereo Theatres").

    70mm PLAYBACK

The CP65 can be optionally equipped for playback of standard Dolby Stereo 70 mm release prints (format 42). However, for "flagship" theatres showing 70 mm prints regularly, the Dolby CP200 70 mm processor is more suitable. The separate surround tracks on stereo surround Dolby Stereo 70 mm prints (format 43) can be decoded only with the CP200, which also provides format preselection and other features for greater flexibility and operational convenience.

    DOLBY STEREO SR•D

Dolby Stereo SR•D is the latest Dolby Stereo 35 mm optical print format. It provides a four-channel analog Dolby Stereo SR track in the usual location, and a new Dolby Stereo digital optical track–with six discrete channels–located between the sprocket holes on one edge of the film.

The conventional analog track ensures that Dolby Stereo SR•D prints are playable in virtually any theatre, while the digital track offers improved performance in theatres equipped for digital playback. Among the benefits of the digital track are discrete multiple channels (Left, Center, Right, Left Surround, Right Surround, and Subwoofer), outstanding durability, and performance equivalent to the best Dolby Stereo 70 mm magnetic releases and CD's.

Equipping for digital playback requires fitting the projectors with digital readers supplied by Dolby Laboratories, and adding a digital decoding unit to the sound system ahead of the Dolby Stereo cinema processor.

With six-channel inputs, a six-channel fader, and a special stereo surround/subwoofer module with parametric equalization for the surround speakers, the Dolby CP65 has been designed specifically to take full advantage of the Dolby Stereo SR•D format.
